It's hard to
imagine that in this time of "green" awareness that
there are still litter bugs out there; people who
actually still toss their fast food bags out the
window while driving down the road! Well, there will
always be individuals who can't seem to break old
habits or don't want to for whatever reason. All we
can do as parents is try to raise eco-conscious
children who care about their environment. Trying to
raise a "green" kid and actually accomplishing it
are two different things. One approach to help your
kids develop earth friendly attitudes would be to
get them involved in the beautification and clean up
of their very own communities.
Parents you may or may not remember the "crying
indian" PSA on television back in the 1970's, but it
was hugely successful in raising awareness about
pollution and littering. If you saw that PSA you
would not likely forget it. That PSA was brought
about through the Keep America Beautiful
organization. Keep America Beautiful came into
existence in 1953, long before eco-friendliness was
hip, and this organization remains very strong until
this day.
The focus of Keep America Beautiful is litter
prevention, waste reduction and the beautification
of communities across America. Each year from March
1 through May 31, millions of Keep America Beautiful
volunteers organize and participate in the Great
American Cleanup. Activities during this time
include planting of trees and flowers,
beautification of parks, picking up of litter, and
cleaning of our seashores and waterways. What a
great way to show your children the importance of
community involvement while cleaning up the
environment at the same time!
